Heart Of The Highlands

Heart Of The Highlands

Overview

Amid the breathtaking peaks of the Maluti-Drakensberg Mountains, a critically endangered species fights for survival. With only 350 individuals remaining, the Bearded Vulture faces grave threats from poisoning, habitat destruction, and human misconceptions.

Hearts Of The Highlands follows the Bearded Vulture Recovery Program, a coalition of dedicated conservationists, NGOs, and communities striving to protect these majestic birds. Through cross-border education, safe feeding initiatives, and groundbreaking tracking research, the program mitigates risks and fosters coexistence.

Blending hope, science, and cultural dialogue, the film highlights the urgent need for collective action to preserve the Bearded Vulture—a symbol of resilience and the vital ecosystem services it provides.

Challenge

The Bearded Vulture population has been severely impacted by a range of human-induced threats. These include the poisoning of vultures through toxic substances used in pest control, illegal trade for traditional medicine, disturbances to their habitats, and collisions with infrastructure such as energy generation and transmission lines. With a declining population, urgent action is required to secure the future of the Bearded Vulture.

The Bearded Vulture Recovery Programme focuses on several key areas:

  • Reducing Mortality: Addressing the direct threats to Bearded Vultures, including poisoning, persecution, and human-wildlife conflict.
  • Increasing Productivity: Ensuring the availability of safe food sources and suitable habitats to encourage breeding and support population growth.
  • Establishing a Captive Population: Implementing a breeding programme to create an ex-situ genetic reserve, supplementing the wild population and helping to restore numbers where needed.

In addition to these primary objectives, the programme is committed to raising awareness, supporting research and monitoring efforts, and ensuring the sustainability of the project through effective administration and fundraising initiatives.

Approach

Our documentary sought to highlight not only the critical biology and the threats facing the Bearded Vulture but also the incredible teamwork involved in this project. We focused on the people—the conservationists, scientists, and local communities across South Africa and Lesotho who are tirelessly working to protect the Bearded Vulture. Their stories of collaboration, dedication, and hope formed the heart of this video, creating a compelling narrative that speaks to the power of collective action.

Through captivating visuals and emotional storytelling, we captured the essence of the project: the challenges faced by the Bearded Vulture, the ongoing efforts to overcome these obstacles, and the significant strides being made towards the species' recovery. By showcasing the work of the Bearded Vulture Recovery Programme’s partners, we were able to shine a light on the success of cross-border conservation efforts and the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration.
